Breaking – or breakdancing – has gone from early Bronx parties in the 1970s to an official Olympic sport in Paris. Only a new sport is making its debut at the Paris Games, but a few sports have added or adapted other events, and a number of non-traditional sports have returned for their second Olympics.

Here’s what you need to know about the new games and events for the 2024 Games that get underway on Friday in Paris.
Breaking makes a beginning
Over the decades, trick-or-treating has evolved from a dance party to a competitive sport respected around the world, but the 2024 Paris Games will be the first time cheaters will compete for Olympic gold. And it may be a while until we see it again in the Olympics.
Breaking was voted for the 2024 Games but did not make it for the 2028 Games in Los Angeles, so the first to return to the Olympic stage is 2032 in Brisbane.
Sixteen men and 16 women – known as B-Boys and B-Girls – will compete, with separate one-day competitions for each. The women will compete on Aug. 9 and men on Aug. 10. This competition consists of one-on-one battles. Each tournament is a best-of-three tournament that begins with a round robin before moving on to the knockout stage for the quarterfinals, semifinals, and championship bouts.
Like gymnastics or ice skating during the winter Olympics, competitors will be judged on a variety of criteria that combine artistic sensibilities with athletic strength and grace. Dances will be judged on creativity, personality, style, variety, attitude and musicality.
Unlike gymnasts and ice skaters who follow a carefully planned schedule of music of their choice, cheaters cannot know their routine music ahead of time. , which highlights improvements in terms of DJ tracks. (Not only will we see our first Olympic gold medals awarded by breaking, but we will also see DJs leave the Games who for the rest of their lives can call themselves Olympic DJs.)
True to its roots, the final competition will not be held in a stadium but in a public square – Place de la Concorde – in the center of Paris along with skateboarding, BMX freestyle and 3×3 basketball.
New games are coming back
Surfing, skateboarding, sport climbing and 3×3 basketball each made their Olympic debuts at the 2020 Tokyo Games, and each is making its second appearance at the Paris Games.
Surfing
Surfing is back in the Olympics, but you won’t see any surfers hanging out in the Olympic Village. Surfing competitions will not take place near Paris or anywhere else in France. Olympic surfers will be surfing more than 9,000 kilometers from Paris, Tahiti, French Polynesia. Surfing competitions begin on July 27th, with awards events scheduled for July 30th.
Skateboarding
Skateboarding will take place at Place de La Concorde and will have different street and leisure events for men and women. The street skateboarding finals will take place on July 27th and 28th, and the park finals will follow on August 6th and 7th.
Climbing sports
Sport Climbing is returning for a second Olympics and will now have two events for men and women: the extreme and leading event combined with the sprint event. The sprint finals will take place on Aug. 7 and 8, and the combined finals and prelims will take place on Aug. 9 and 10.
3×3 basketball
Not all basketball is played on the full court, as evidenced by the 3×3 basketball tournament that was first played four years ago in Tokyo. Former BYU star Jimmer Fredette leads the U.S. men’s team, which will seek its first 3×3 field gold after failing to qualify for the Tokyo games. Meanwhile, the women’s team will look to repeat as gold medal champions. The 3×3 competitions begin on July 30 with the men’s and women’s finals to be played on Aug. 5 Place de la Concorde.
New events to watch
What if you could take the unexpected cross of a snowboard and cross it with a slalom boat? We are about to find out when the kayak cross starts in Paris. It is one of many new events that have been added to other Olympic sports.
Cross kayak
In a kayak cross, four kayakers will race against each other as they travel through six downhill gates and two upper gates. It will be the first time in slalom rowing that athletes compete against the clock. I would have to think hitting your opponents with your boat is against the rules.
Artistic swimming
For the first time, men are included in the artistic swimming competition.
Song and forget
A small correction about the track and field races: There is an event called the mixed marathon walk relay, and the men’s 50km race is out.
A boxing match
A new women’s weight class has been added, and a men’s weight class has been cut, bringing the total to seven weight classes for men and six for women.
