According to Southwest Airlines, the heat is so extreme that the soda cans used on their planes are exploding.
“We are aware of this issue and are taking steps to keep beverages on board cold, especially at our airports that experience extreme temperatures,” a Southwest Airlines spokeswoman said in a statement. “It’s a cross-functional effort between our airport and air teams.”
Temperatures across the West have been dropping lately, as well as breaking records.
In fact, Las Vegas recently had its hottest temperature ever, 120 degrees. Temperatures there stayed above 100 degrees for the next few days.
Sin City also broke an 83-year-old record Sunday when it reached 114 degrees.
There were reports of canister explosions at airports in the West and South West.
“Airlines where we have a large presence – such as Las Vegas, Phoenix, and many areas of Texas – continue to experience record temperatures, with intense heat arriving earlier and persisting throughout the summer ,” Southwest Airlines continued. “For the safety of our employees and customers, we are taking steps to educate and reduce all heat-related hazards.”
When soda cans get hotter than they’re used to, they expand. The heat causes the carbon dioxide to create pressure inside the can, which can cause it to open as soon as it moves.
